A Man Like Sam
A Man Like Sam
A Man Like Sam follows the inspiring journey of Samuel Mugabi, a Ugandan man living with Down syndrome who is breaking societal barriers working as an office assistant with Upasuaji International and dreaming of future of independence for himself. In a region where children with intellectual disabilities are frequently isolated or viewed as a misfortune, Sam’s path to independence is a testament to the power of opportunity and his parents’ advocacy and belief in their son. The film centers on Sam’s own voice as he opens up about his personal goals and the daily realities navigating societal discrimination and advocating for his own agency. His journey is mirrored by the reflections of his parents, who detail the hurdles they faced raising a child with specialized needs in a society lacking institutional support while also sharing the pride and joy that he has brought their family. This narrative weaves Sam’s experiences alongside the professional and personal insights of Lynsay Balumuka and Diana Mutoni, two mothers who have parented children with Down syndrome and now lead the charge for medical, educational, and social inclusion in East Africa. A Man Like Sam is an inspiring look at resilience, family devotion, and the systemic fight to prove that every individual is worth the investment.
